The Glacian Empire and the World
I suppose when Explaining anything about a place only you know one must begin with the very basics of what concerns life. Advaita is the name of a vast continent separated into four territories. Those territories are known simply as the North, South, East and Western reaches of Advaita. To the North-east is a cluster of small to medium Islands known as the Draconian Isle’s. To the West is a larger continent as yet vastly unexplored, save but for the few western trading cities and to the south a large crescent shaped Island surrounded by perilous reef’s and ship killer storms.
At the heart of Advaita where all roads lead is a vast plateau that was once the heart of the Glacian Empire. That Plateau is now known only as the Shadow Fields and none but the most fool hardy dare to travel upon it. Almost two and a half thousand years before the Present the empire of Glacia encompassed all of Advaita and its neighboring lands. Times were peaceful and magic was reaching the zenith of its power. The sorcerers of Glacia had discovered means of brining life to metal giants they called Golems, though not all were wrought of steel or iron. Some were made of wood, others stone and many others of natural elements. These golems became the protectors of the Imperial Capital. At the peak of its power the Empire was also at peace with the mysterious and powerful beasts of the Distant Draconian Isle’s. they called themselves Dragon’s and would often send their emissaries the Dragoon’s to speak on their behalf for the Dragon’s rarely found need to leave there ancestral home. Alas it was not the Dragon’s or their emissaries the Dragoon’s that brought about the downfall of Glacia but rather their distant cousins the Drakes. Massive beasts similar to Dragons but smaller in stature and duller of mind rose up against the Empire and laid it to waste. Small in number but fierce when in battle it took no more then twelve to end what had taken generations to build. Thus Glacia fell to ruin as the drakes turned both magic and their own natural power against humanity, though for what reason it was never known. Since that day The Plateau where the now ruined city stands is empty of all life but that of those few Drakes who remain to guard the ruins and monsters of unknown origin. Only the foolhardy or the desperate travel across the plateau and very few if any survive such journeys.
When Glacia fell all of Advaita fell with it into chaos, the Dark Century as it came to be called saw much that had once been lost and divided into the four territories. War broke out between them periodically though much was focused internally as men strove to gather power about themselves and establish a government under their power. By the end of the Dark Century the four Territories had their new rulers and steadily began to steady itself until the Territories became as they are now in present. For better or worse however we shall never know for as was said before much was lost with the fall of the Glacian Empire but even more was lost in that once Century of internal conflict.
Magic, Sleepers and Magistone Since the fall of the Glacian Empire magic gradually weakened and lessened with much that was learned lost forever in time. People over the millennia came to fear and hate magic because they understood so little of it and eventually any found to posses such powers were either put to death or bonded into servitude to the Rulers of each Territory. It is rumored however that there is a school for such learning upon the Shadow Fields, though such a rumor must indeed be false for the drakes and nightmarish fiends of that accursed place must have surly disposed of any who dwell there.
Magic was at one point divided into nine main fields, these fields were as follows; Conjuration, Spiritual, Elemental, Divination, Enchantment, Illusion, Transmutation, Evocation and Necromancy. All nine fields of magic were studied by all who sought to call themselves Sorcerers, though the use of Necromancy is forbidden and greatly frowned upon. It is learned however for the simple fact that all the nine fields of magic are in some way connected or must be used together to acquire a desired effect or result. For example, the treatment of a broken bone or torn flesh requires the use of three fields, Necromancy for its understanding of flesh and bone, Spiritual for the energies of the soul needed to aid in the healing and Evocation for the manipulation and drawing out of those energies.
While some sorcerers are more proficient in some fields then others no one sorcerer has ever mastered all Nine. (It is suspected however that the Dragon’s of The Draconian Isle’s are in fact proficient Masters of all fields.)
In olden times any child, man or woman who possessed some well of power were immediately taken to be trained in the use of their powers, for a misplaced emotion or action could very well arose the dormant power inflicting the potential for harm to others. These people who possessed magic that had not yet awoken fully were called and still are to this day ‘Sleepers’. A Sleeper whose power begins to fluctuate is a dangerous person for they have no control or warning about what they might have unintentionally done, depending on the field where they are strongest each Sleepers power. If not found some Sleepers have been known to be destroyed by their own power as it manifests itself, others are set upon by creatures they might have accidentally called forth and some are even driven insane as the minds of everyone around them become audible.
There is however only one particular thing that nullifies the effect of all magic however and that is Magistone. The rock is crystalline in nature often glowing but never brightly its colouring is to begin with coal black like obsidian. When it is placed upon something full of magic however the stone begins to clear and brighten as it absorbs all magic within a living person on free magic being. To work however Magistone must be in contact with bare flesh. The stone itself can be lethal to creatures such as Elementals who are purely magic and even more dangerous to natural Golems, it is only the Golems made of steel that are impervious to the affects, perhaps because their bodies are not wrought with magic but by the forge and hammer of a blacksmith.
Golems Golems are creatures forged from all nine of the magic fields; their lifeblood is raw magic. In the Time of the Glacian Empire, Golems of rock were created to protect the gates of the Imperial city while Fire and Energy Golems were made to attack invaders, guided by human soldiers who kept the peace within the walls.
The Golems of Steel and Iron however were kept primarily for the palace because of their immunity to Magistone and their ability to shake of almost any attack. They were slow to move however because the heavy armor they are comprised of. All Golems stand at ten feet tall and posses the strength and power of twenty men, their minds however are as slow as their movements but despite that they are unwaveringly loyal and will obey the instant an order is given.
Dark Hunters These men and women are selected from all over Advaita and trained in the most ancient skills. They have no past and move like shadows staying unseen and unnoticed among the populous. Your own best friend could very well be a Dark Hunter and you could never know. Dark Hunters are hired trackers, killers and spies. When on the hunt they are relentless in tracking and capturing or killing their targets using people for bait regardless of the human loss. Dark Hunters are without remorse or anything close to mercy or compassion they are trained to shut out their emotions.
Dark Hunters are also proficient in magic able to bend the wills of others, assault magic and illusion. All Dark Hunters carry with them brooches that depict an eagle with three obsidian stones, one for the eye, one in the talons and one above it like a black moon. This brooch is two sided, one it marks a person as a Dark hunter or if one who is not a Dark Hunter touches it acts like a locator drawing hunters after the person who possessed the brooch. The origins of the Dark Hunters is unknown, it is not even known where their base of origin is and only a few know how to contact this secretive brotherhood and those who tried to find them often were never seen again.
Dragoons Dragoons while human in appearance differ in subtle and one extreme way. They all stand approximately eight feet tall and wear a special armor infused with magic that repels the effect of Magistone. They have small smooth horns that curve across their foreheads from behind their ears. Their eyes are always a deep vibrant green, blue, gold, violet and red. They also posses a pair of large webbed wings that allow them to fly or glide where they wish. On top of that Dragoons are very well versed in all forms of magic. Despite this however and their fearsome appearance dragoons were gentle and kind beings whose sole purpose was to defend Draconia and do the bidding of the dragons.
Cadaver: Death Hounds These large and powerful horrors of death are patchwork abominations created once long ago by necromancers to patrol and protect their lairs. They are fast and deadly with their sharp claws, and large warmish head split down the middle and lined with a double row of sharp needle like teeth made to sever and rip flesh and steel. Their multiple eyes serve the purpose of allowing the creatures to see in several directions at once, the only way to kill them is to drive a weapon through their heavy plated skull into the brain of sever the head from the spinal column. Death Hounds have extremely sensitive senses of smell enabling them to track prey through any terrain or over any surface, when they find a target will not relent their hunt until they capture or kill their prey, they move without tearing and at a speed that sees them outrun a horse at full gallop, they are deadly hunters but limited in intelligence.
